Personal Philosophy of Gifted Education:
Welcome to my AIG website! I am currently a Media Coordinator at Southwest Elementary School but have spent 8 years teaching 5th grade in Carteret and Onslow Counties. I am currently getting my certification in AIG education to be able to provide more resources and information to serve that population of students. I believe that it is important to help students identify their strengths and talents and to be encouraged to develop them to their greatest potential. Through gifted education, students have opportunities to develop their experiences, resources, abilities, and talents to become well-rounded, successful adults. Students can use these resources to develop motivation, creativity, skills, and interests. Through gifted education, students can work in groups and on projects that challenge and expand upon their knowledge base to develop an understanding of how they can best contribute to society.
North Carolina Definition of Gifted:
Academically or intellectually gifted (AIG) students perform or show the potential to perform at substantially high levels of accomplishment when compared with others of their age, experiences or environment. Academically or intellectually gifted students exhibit high performance capability in intellectual areas, specific academic fields, or in both the intellectual areas and specific academic fields. Academically or intellectually gifted students require differentiated educational services beyond those ordinarily provided by the regular educational program. Outstanding abilities are present in students from all cultural groups, across all economic strata, and in all areas of human endeavor. (Article 9B)

Onslow County Plan and Resources for Gifted Education:
During the 2009-2010 school year, the state of North Carolina asked all school districts to create new strategic plans for AIG. Onslow County leadership solicited input from a variety of stakeholders and generated a comprehensive plan to address each AIG Program Standard. Program standards were identified as "Maintained" if they were currently in place, "Focused" if they were targets that the program would seek to achieve by 2013, or "Future" if the standards required further study.
